It happens to the best of us. One morning, you’re minding your business, getting ready for the day when your reflection in the mirror looks a bit...different. You’re still your gorgeous self, of course, but with a few more little reminders of a life full of laughter, frustration, joy, and deep thought. The lines on your forehead and by your eyes are a little deeper and more defined than you remember them ever being. If you are particularly bothered by these lines, there is something you can do about it! Botox is probably a word you’ve heard before, but what exactly is it?
What is Botox?
Botox is the brand name of the botulinum toxin injectable solution manufactured by Allergan . Botulinum toxin may sound a bit off putting, but is a very popular and considerably safe injection. In large doses, the toxin can be poisonous, but in small doses, as those administered during a cosmetic procedure, Botox is safe.
How does Botox work?
Many think Botox is a solution that works to fill in your lines and wrinkles, but this isn’t the case. Botox works to temporarily (for approximately 3-4 months) paralyze the forehead, glabella, and orbicularis oculi muscles. When you give these muscles a break, your body’s hardworking growth factors are better able to deploy and repair the tissue damage that presents as the tiny wrinkles and lines on your upper face.
